The Gruffalo and Science Week

Pear Tree Day Nursery made the local news last week when our science week and Gruffalo activities were featured in Get Hampshire. We celebrated The Gruffalo’s 15th birthday with an explosive science demonstration!

Science Activities for Pre-Schoolers

Pear Tree Day Nursery Volcano 6 (480x640)One of the Gruffalo’s friends is Zog the dragon and we all know that dragons live near volcanoes and breathe fire, so we thought it would be fun to teach the children how volcanoes explode using items that we can eat and drink. This also means we can get nice and messy which makes it a more exciting learning experience that engages the children in science.

If you’ve never tried making volcanoes using Diet Coke and mint flavoured Mentos (has to be Mentos), this is a fun experiment you can do at home. The science behind it is possibly a little beyond our budding scientists: if you want a simple explanation read this – The Science of Coke and Mentos.

Here are our spectacular results!
